Band COVID-19 Safety Guidelines

There has been a great deal of thought and planning from our district in the guidelines that have been released to ensure the safety of our students as they return to school this fall. This document was comprised by a collaboration of our secondary fine art teachers and is meant to work with those guidelines adding measures specific to the arts in Crandall. I am grateful for the hard work of these teachers and the direction from our administration in helping us maintain the high expectations of our art programs while making student safety the highest priority.

Welcome Mr. Conaway

Welcome to Crandall Mark Conaway! We are very excited to have Mr. Conaway join us as both our Choir Director and Assistant Band Director at the High School. Mr. Conaway is one of those rare talents who has experienced success with both choir and band. He will be a great fit for our secondary music team!

Mark Conaway has been a member of the Stephen F. Austin State University Concert Chorus, where he sang baritone, under the direction of Dr. Terry Eder. He has been a long-time member of the St. Philip's United Methodist Choir in Garland TX, under the current direction of Carol Adams. Mr. Conaway has frequently led worship at SPUMC for many years, along with leading choir rehearsals and organizing special choir/ instrument events such as Easter and Christmas Services. Mr. Conaway has also assisted Megan Senter, Sunnyvale Choir Director, as they have prepared and taken groups to UIL Choir Concert and Sight-reading events. While at Sunnyvale, Mr. Conaway has performed and assisted with choir and instrumental rehearsals for their spring musicals.

Mark Conaway, a native Texan, is in his 25th year of Music Education. Presently he is Band Director at Gaston Middle School, in Dallas ISD, and most previously, the Director of Bands at Sunnyvale High School, Sunnyvale Texas. At Sunnyvale High School, the “Raider Pride” Ensembles have consistently received sweepstake ratings at both UIL Concert & Sight-reading Contest and UIL Marching Contest. Countless first division ratings and caption awards at music festivals in the state of Texas are some of the highlights of the groups. The Sunnyvale Bands have placed multiple years as TMEA “3A Honor Band Finalist”, along with the ATSSB “Outstanding Performance Series” recognized State Level Recordings. In regard to marching, the “Sound of Sunnyvale” has numerous times represented well at UIL Area B Marching Contest Finals. Prior to Sunnyvale ISD, Mr. Conaway taught in both high school and middle school settings in Wylie ISD, Plano ISD, Garland ISD and Mesquite ISD. Originally from Murchison, Texas, he graduated from Brownsboro High School in 1990, under the incredible direction of band directors Jim Yancey, Ray Shaw, and Karen Norman.

He is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, where he received a degree in Bachelor of Music Education. Mr. Conaway holds membership affiliations with the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Association of Texas Small School Bands, Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and recently inducted into the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, International Bandmasters Fraternity.

Mr. Conaway lives in Historic Downtown Forney, Texas and has been happily married to Christie Conaway for 25 years. They have twin 9th grade sons, Grant and Preston, and live in an old home circa 1895. Both are founding members of the Forney Arts Council, the Forney “Community Band”, and the “Forney Live House Concert Series”. In their spare time, they love all things outdoors, hiking and trail running, old school vintage wear, and RV’ing across the country in a 1971 Shasta Trailer named “Gladys”.
