Beginning Band
Welcome!
We’re sure many of our incoming 6th graders have
questions about band. We’ll answer some of the most
common questions here. If you need additional
information, feel free to contact us via email.
Do I have to know how to play or read yet?
No, we’ll teach you how to read music and play
your instrument.
Do I need to get an instrument over the summer?
No, you do not. It’s great if you want to get a
head start, but not necessary. If you do wish to buy over
the summer, please choose an instrument on the
recommended instrument list.
McKay Music Company will do an instrument drive at the
CMS Band Hall on September 2, 2009.
Where do I look for instruments?
Award Music of Terrell and McKay Music of
Garland can help you find the right instrument. We also
recommend asking family and friends, newspaper ads, and
even pawn shops. Retail outlets that don’t specialize in
music will offer new beginner instruments at bargain
prices. However, higher quality used instruments can
usually be found at better prices.
I have a used instrument that’s not on the
recommended instrument list.
Can a band director look it over for me?
Yes, we can. Please email us to set up a time.
