We’re sure many of our incoming 6th graders have questions about band. We’ll answer some of the most common questions here. If you need additional information, feel free to contact us via email.
Do I have to know how to play or read music yet?
No, we’ll teach you how to read music and play your instrument.
What book do I need for beginner band?
Wind players will need Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 for your instrument. Percussionists will need The Packet by Frank Chapple and Simple Steps to Beginning Percussion by Kennan Wylie. Books can be purchased at your local music store, or online retailers such as Amazon.
Do I need to get an instrument over the summer?
No, you do not. It’s great if you want to get a head start, but not necessary. If you do wish to buy over the summer, please choose an instrument on the recommended instrument list. McKay Music Company will hold an instrument drive at the CMS Band Hall in the fall.
Where do I look for instruments?
McKay Music of Garland or Award Music of Terrell can help you find the right instrument. Click here for an information document on these stores. We also recommend asking family and friends, newspaper ads, and even pawn shops. Retail outlets that don’t specialize in music will offer new beginner instruments at bargain prices. However, higher quality used instruments can usually be found at better prices. McKay Music will be on hand September 4, 2018 from 4 - 7 for instrument rentals and purchases.
Percussionists can find everything they need at Lone Star Percussion.
I have a used instrument that’s not on the recommended instrument list. Can a band director look it over for me?
Yes, we can. Please email us to set up a time.
Please check the full calendar for upcoming dates.
